Chaiti Durga, also known as Chaitra Navratri, is a nine-day Hindu festival celebrated in the month of Chaitra (March-April). The festival of Chaiti Durga is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was a demon who had the power to change his form at will. He was wreaking havoc in the three worlds, and the gods were unable to defeat him. The gods then created Goddess Durga, who fought with Mahishasura for nine days and finally defeated him on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra.

During the nine days of Chaiti Durga, people observe fasts and offer prayers to the goddess. They wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear new clothes. They then offer prayers to the goddess, usually by reciting mantras and singing hymns. The puja or prayer ceremony is usually performed by a priest, who is well-versed in the scriptures.

People also decorate their homes and temples with flowers and lights during the festival. They create beautiful rangolis, or colorful designs made on the floor using rice flour or colored powder, outside their homes. They also prepare delicious food, which is served to guests and family members.

On the eighth day of the festival, which is known as Ashtami, young girls are worshipped as manifestations of the goddess. This day is also called Kanya Pujan or Kanjak Pujan. The girls are given new clothes and food, and their feet are washed as a sign of respect. This ritual is performed to seek the blessings of the goddess and to honor the divine feminine power.

The ninth day of the festival, which is called Navami, is considered to be the most important day of the festival. On this day, a grand puja is performed in honor of Goddess Durga.
